Jaya Bachchan's father is writer, journalist and stage artist Taroon Kumar Bhaduri and her mother is Indira.
She studied in St. Joseph's Convent School, Bhopal.
At the age of 15 she started her career with a small role in Satyajit Ray's Bengali film Mahanagar.
In 1971 she got her first break in Hindi films with Hrishikesh Mukherjee's film Guddi.
The actress has starred in many hit films such as Jawani Diwani, Koshish, Anamika and Bawarchi.
On June 3, 1973, she married actor Amitabh Bachchan. Their children are Shweta Bachchan Nanda and Abhishek.
Jaya has acted with Amitabh Bachchan in Zanjeer (1973), Abhimaan (1973), Chupke Chupke (1975) and Sholay (1975).
During the late 1980s she wrote the story for Shahenshah, which starred her husband in the lead.
After a gap of 18 years, she played a mother's role in Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa (1998).
In 2000, she starred in the film Fiza. The film was considered one of her best performances and she received the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for her work.
In 2003, she received a Best Supporting Actress Award for her performance in Kal Ho Naa Ho.
