Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, more commonly known as Ash, was born on 1st November 1973 to Krishnaraj Rai, a marine engineer and Vrinda Rai, a writer. She has an elder brother named Aditya Rai who is an engineer in the merchant navy.
Born in Mangalore, her family moved to Mumbai shortly and she received her primary and secondary education at the Arya Vidya Mandir in Santa Cruz. She later attended Jai Hind College for one year after which she moved to Ruparel College in Matunga. Always bright throughout school and college, Rai aspired to become an architect some day. But these plans were put on hold when she won the title of Miss India World in 1994. She went on to win Miss World 1994 and hasn't looked back since then.
An intriguing and sensational actress and model, Aishwarya Rai spent one year reigning as Miss Word in London after which she returned to India to pursue her modelling career to the next level!
She starred in her first movie – Mani Ratnam’s Iruvar in 1997. Her second film and introduction to Bollywood was Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya, which also released in 1997 but failed to do well at the box office. Her third project, S Sankar’s Jeans was a critical and commercial success and won her Filmfare’s Best South Actress Award.
Aishwarya Rai went on to star in many Bollywood movies like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Taal, Josh and the remake of Devdas with Shah Rukh Khan and Madhuri Sixit, which brought her a lot of international attention at the Cannes where it was given a special screening.
Her name gained a lot of recognition overseas when she was chosen as one of TIME magazines '100 most influential people' in 2004. She has also appeared as a guest on The Late Show With David Letterman and Oprah’s Women Across The Globe Segment. She was also signed on as one of the brand ambassadors of L'Oreal in 2005, which put her in the same league as Adny McDowell, Eva Longoria and Penelope Cruz!
Rai has been a regular at the Cannes Film Festival since 2002, and was a member of the Jury at Cannes in the year 2003. In October 2004, a wax figure of Rai became on display in London's Madame Tussaud's wax museum. The same month, her first foreign film, Bride and Prejudice released. He next international project was The Mistress Of Spices with Dylan McDermott, which was the adaptation of a novel by Chitra Bannerjee Divakaruni.
Aishwarya Rai got married to Abhishek Bachchan, son of the movie titan Amitabh Bachchan on the April 20, 2007.
