Tabu's father is Jamal Hashmi and her mother is Rizwana. She is the younger sister of actress Farha and she's also Shabana Azmi's niece.
At the age of 10 Tabu began her career in the film Hum Naujawan (1985), where she played the role of Dev Anand's daughter.
As an adult, her first film was Vijaypath, opposite Ajay Devgan.
By the year 1996, Tabu had acted in about eight movies, but some films such as Saajan Chale Sasural and Virasat went on to become big hits. Though the film was not a huge hit, Maachis bought her critical acclaim.
Tabu also acted in a number of Telugu films such as Coolie No. 1 and Ninne Pelladatha.
She also received a lot of appraise for her performance in Chandni Bar.
She starred in her first Hollywood film in 2007, The Namesake, directed by Mira Nair, which was a huge hit overseas.
In the movie Cheeni Kum she played a 34 year-old woman who falls in love with a 64 year-old played by Amitabh Bachchan, which again was a huge hit overseas especially in the UK and US.
In 2008, she won the Filmfare Critics award for best actor (Female) for her role in Cheeni Kum.
