The actress has learnt to take it all in her stride

Koena Mitra burst into the modelling scene after winning the Gladrags mega model competition in 2002. She entered Bollywood with a sizzling number in Ram Gopal Varma’s Road but today she claims to be looking beyond item numbers. Her brief appearance in Sangeeth Sivan’s Apna Sapna Money Money hasn’t really sent her market value soaring but Koena is undeterred. Having shifted base from Kolkata to Mumbai she is here to stay…

Tell us about your hair; is it naturally curly or straight?

Oh God, you must have seen some really old pictures of mine with the frizzled look. I sported it for ramp shows or commercials. I have poker straight hair and prefer keeping it that way.

Your experience in the modelling world…

Well, I was from another city and quite young. But at the same time I was a titleholder so was being paid almost double the fee others were being paid. The pettiness, jealousies, the sheer levels of desperation the other women are capable of is unbelievable.

Now that homosexuality is out of the closet, do you think women are safer?

No, absolutely not! The gay community has been around for a long time. Men were being propositioned even a decade ago. They had to make a conscious choice whether they wanted to succumb in order to boost their career prospects. So many fashion designers, make-up men, have always been gay. Today, they have come clean about their sexual preferences.

What is the one thing your mother doesn’t know about you?

I really wish there was something she did not know about me. I don’t drink since I hate the taste of alcohol. I haven’t been seeing anybody since Rajiv Singh and me broke up a year ago. And mom meets all my friends when she comes to Bombay. So I guess I am just a boring type of person.

You have a fairly large circle of friends. Who do you think make better friends men or women?

Men, most definitely! Women unconsciously compete with each other. Often their relationships are beset with problems or misunderstandings. The male sex is far easier to interact with.

Just read this 'bitchy' article... She is talking
abt everything except her face lift! I think one should have
asked koena abt her face job, she has completely changed her
face... I mean why would someone do that? I read in a
national daily abt bipasha basu not paying her doc for doing
a boob job, i hope she has cleared all her due.. Orelse u
know what would happen? Ha ha. Frankly speaking bongs r very
pretty and they need nt do anything. Look at sharmila,
rakhee, suchitra, rani and kajol! These days models wants to
make themselves look like pamela... They have lost it! But
nonetheless, the interview was honest and nice. Do we get to
read abt all riya, tanusree, rimmi and others... The bong
b-grade!
