When NY architect Kiran Merchant decided to make a film, he didn't have to look too far. Kiran who found the horror tales of his male friends' lack of commitment to their ladies hilarious, made a film on just that. Starring Lisa Ray and Maulik Panchouly, his film Quarter Life Crisis (showing at IFFI, Goa) talks about a successful NRI Neil Mehta's journey after he steps out of his six-year-old relationship simply because he cannot commit to the woman he loves.
According to Kiran he had not sketched the characters keeping a particular ethnicity in mind. It could have well been a white couple starring in place of the Asian one, he insists. Either way, even as he prefers to call his film a 'Hollywood venture' the two lead actors of Asian origin have earned him a place in this year's IFFI. He proposes to release the film in India in January next year, 'when there won't be too many big releases'. Quarter Life Crisis also stars funnyman Russel Peters as a 'philosophical cabbie'.
