Mumbai Meri Jaan is terrifyingly real!
One of the most talked about releases of 2007 Anurag Kashyap's Black Friday looked at the 1992 Mumbai blasts while Rajkumar Gupta's Aamir concentrated on terror's stranglehold on an innocent man. And recently in the wake of low intensity bomb blasts in two major cities, the message that Nishikant Kamat's Mumbai Meri Jaan tries to convey comes across loud and clear.
Since public memory is short-lived, the filmmaker takes it upon himself to pay a tribute to the residents of Mumbai who lost their near and dear ones in the 2006 train blasts.
About the film:
Seven blasts rocked suburban trains in Mumbai (on July 11, 2006) ripping apart several compartments. Mangled bodies of passengers were hurled out and survivors bleeding profusely jostled to come out, leading to chaotic scenes. Mumbai Meri Jaan sheds light on the after effects of the blasts and how it brings out the deepest and darkest emotions. It highlights the trials and tribulations of the victims and their family members as they try to limp back to life, and whatever remains of it.
Characters look real:
The best part about Mumbai Meri Jaan is its characterisation. From a promising broadcast journalist (Soha Ali Khan) to a patriotic corporate man (R Madhavan); from an old policeman at the twilight of his life (Paresh Rawal) to a junior cop brimming with energy (Vijay Maurya); from an angry unemployed youth (Kay Kay Menon) to a poor coffee-vendor (Irrfan) struggling to survive in the city, the film follows the lives of people from every strata of society as they tackle the aftermath of a fatal incident, a catatlyst in their lives.
Well-knit plots:
The film touches some raw nerves and has a few heart-wrenching moments. The actors excel as individuals. Be it Paresh Rawal's tragi-comic act as a senior cop, Madhavan's phobia to get on a train after the incident, Kay Kay taking every Muslim guy to be a terrorist or Maurya's seething frustration as an honest cop trapped in a faulty state of affairs, they come across as REAL.
