REVIEW: Adhyayan's Jashnn
It's raining strugglers at the movies this year. Stuntmen, choreographers, writers, starlets, singers – we have seen them all in recent months. Looks like the 'can do it all' larger-than-life protagonist is suddenly out of fashion.
Jashnn is another such story of dreams and ambition. The characters are classic Bhatt stereotypes: ambitious, unlucky, emotional and self-destructive!
Aspiring rock star Adhyayan Suman and his three friends (a poor man's version of Rock On?) are desperate for a break in the music scene.
Adhyayan's sister, Shahana Gowswami is a high society escort who unapologetically sleeps with rich men to satisfy her materialistic pleasures.
Brother Adhyayan however has no say, as he too is financially dependent on her.
Adhyayan finds support in Anjana Sukhani – who in true Bollywood style – is one of Shahana's client's sister. The rest of the film is a coming of age exercise for Adhyayan who is caught between his dreams, love and sister.
Jashnn has a strong first half. And all credit goes to Shahana Gowswami's effective performance. In fact parts of Jashnn actually become Shahana's story instead of Adhyayan's.
But the makers pack in so much drama in her character, she runs out of steam post interval. In the second half, Shahana's character is reduced to a stereotypical, cranky Bollywood sister.
The notorious sibling could have played an interesting part in Adhyayan's self discovery, had the writers not lost focus. Looks like they suddenly remembered it was Adhyayan's Jashnn. Despite her haggard appearance and abrupt role, Shahana towers above her co-stars in all her scenes.
Adhyayan Suman continues the same confidence he showed in Raaz. And this confidence is what makes up for some of his immaturities as an actor. His character is unfortunately a little too confused for the film's good.
