REVIEW: All the Best
Like Golmaal movies, All the Best also opens with a lavish music video. Sadly this one's title song is no patch on the former's chartbuster. A few scenes later one starts wondering if it's the wrong movie. Lethargic, drab, slapstick jokes and another unnecessary song hog most of the initial reels. Just as you are ready to give up and label it a disaster - enter Sanjay Dutt.
The actor's arrival on the scene and the confusion that follows, take the film to a new high. From here on the director drops his slapstick hat and shifts to a sitcom mode. All the Best is a self confessed tribute to the Hrishikesh Mukherjee brand of comedy. Self-confessed because the director makes no bones about showing clips from the old Golmaal and Chupke Chupke. The plot is simple and resides on a couple of mistaken identities.
Best friends, Ajay Devgan and Fardeen Khan exchange their girlfriends in order to seek approval from Fardeen's millionaire brother, Sanjay Dutt. How and why this happens is best watched on screen. Where All the Best succeeds, is in its ability to stick to the core plot. The confusion never goes out of control and the narrative seldom meanders.
A lot of credit for this must go to the lead performers. Sanjay Dutt is the soul of the film. Despite being an Ajay Devgn production, Dutt gets the best lines and is presented in a way that does justice to his seniority. Ajay's role involves reacting to Dutt's curious questions. And he effortlessly matches the latter's timing. Devgan is slowly becoming a pro in playing the scheming smart alec. Fardeen Khan is once again the suffering third hero who has to pay for mess created by his smarter friends. Though similar to No Entry and Life Partner, Fardeen is still likeable. Bipasha Basu has a good stylist after a long time. But both Basu and Mugdha Godse, have little to do in an all-boys madness.
Reserve a round of applause for Johnny Lever. It's refreshing to see the comedian get a script that does full justice to his histrionics. Lever performs a show reel of his trademark expressions bringing the house down every time he is on screen. He is quite easily the star of the climax - towering above the protagonists.
These actors make up for Rohit Shettly's inconsistent direction. For a comedy, All the Best's pace is not as razor sharp as it ought to have been. Maybe just like his choice of subject, Shetty wanted to keep the treatment of his film unlike Golmaal. But the first half could have done with a lot more energy and enthusiasm.
Pritam's music is not as appealing as the Golmaal series. Which is why the songs don't quite work even as fillers. Director Rohit Shetty's penchant for witty one-liners is visible throughout the film. He even carries on his fixation for Bollywood spoofs. Though the approach is far more underplayed. Which is why some of the smart references to popular villains and film titles might be missed by a section of the audience.
The writers thankfully steer clear of any toilet humour and the stupid, slapstick jokes are kept to the minimum. Which is why All The Best is notches above the pedestrian laugh riots dished out in the name of mass entertainers.
Verdict: Despite a shaky start, All the Best works well as a comedy. It's a clean sitcom packed with clever punches and witty one liners. This one's for the entire family during the festive season.

Just watch and enjoy, all the best
its totaly situational comedy with good soundtracks good
performances
I have seen all the best.... Its below average compared to
golmaal..... Bad jokes..... The story is copied from marathi
drama which is 100 times better than this movie.....
As has been rightly written by anand, enter sanjay dutt..The
movie starts...I enjoyed the movie and laughed my heart
out...What more do you need to have a couple of hours
stress-reliever. Johny lever and his baba act is to good...
I have seen all three movies on this diwali..
blue: it has just 2-3 action scene.. And that too copied
from hollywood movies like bad boys, torque, fast and
furious etc... And actiona are not too good as
hollywoood...
full bakwass movie without proper storyline.. And abt
under
water sequence is for just 15 min... Better watch geo or
discovery channel!!!
all the best: just waste of money, hardly 5-6 comedy
scene... Forced jokes!!!!
mamk: first half is bakwaas... Next half is good.... Good
story...
Its amazing than blue. Blue was very bad, all the best was
10 times better than blue and other movie relised this week.
Its comedy too
All the best is a tiring watch with some non-humorous jokes.
Out of the three movies released this week blue was
excellent. I would suggest blue instead of the other two
movies released this week.
This movie was not gud.. Blue was better than this. I dunno
wy ppl don lik akshay. If he does different kind role u ppl
criticise him. If he does comedy u cant tolerate. Wat the
hell u want frm him.? Every movie u ppl give 1 or 2 * become
mature critics!
