REVIEW: Dhoom Dadakka is crass

Dhoom Dadakka is a phrase commonly used to describe the fun and frolic which happens on happy occasions such as weddings, cricket matches, parties etc. And I (being the rather naïve person that I am) presumed the film would be about some joyous event. After all, the director had put together a cast of stalwarts such as Anupam Kher, Jackie Shroff and Satish Shah. These actors can manage to animate even the most wooden script.

Unfortunately for me I was proved wrong on all counts. Dhoom Dadakka is a so-called comedy with lewd remarks, double entendres and a barrage of obscene words and gestures. The director has literally clammed the film with sexual innuendos, not just in every scene but also in every shot and every single frame. Still this film may not evoke any response from the audiences.

Mungilal (Anupam Kher) is a don who might lose his stronghold because he has no heir apparent. His Man Friday is Jignesh (Satish Shah) whose jet-black dyed hair gives him a rather bizarre look. It’s a pity such a talented actor has been reduced to playing the quintessential 'Gujju Bhai' in every single film. Jackie Shroff is the mafia chieftain and Anupam Kher reports to him. Jackie has been made to imitate Marlon Brando to a T. It's good Marlon Brando is no more or the shock of seeing Jackie Shroff might have killed him.

Anupam Kher hires a detective Johnny English (Satish Kaushik) to locate his long-lost nephew Kamal who is the heir apparent to a fortune worth crores. And Ramba (Deepshikha) plays Satish Kaushik’s sexually frustrated wife. She has been made to flaunt her bosom to such an extent it becomes a turn-off rather than a turn on.

Satish Kaushik who is originally from the National School of Drama Delhi seems to have forgotten his acting skills. Or maybe he just does what the producers expect from him.

Mungilal makes a really tempting offer to Johnny English, if English can locate his nephew. And thanks to Johnny English's bumbling efforts Shaad Randhawa, Aaarti Chhabria, Sammir Dattani and Shama Sikander land up at Mungilal’s palatial mansion in Bangkok.

What ensues, is a comedy of errors which makes up the whole film. There are a couple of songs thrown in for good measure and also an item song. But even the music fails to make an impact.

The film has good production values and a brilliant choice of locations. Pity so much money was spent with nothing to show for it.

Verdict: Do see this film if lewd, vulgar, so-called comedies are your cup of tea.
