REVIEW: Mehbooba
This film has come like a bolt from the blue, with billboards and posters showing the visibly young trio of Manisha Koirala, Sanjay Dutt and Ajay Devgan. Afzal Khan's Mehbooba has generated curiosity not only because it is a project that has taken more than 10 years to see light of day, but also because of a unique star cast. 1st LOOK: Ajay's Mehbooba
The Plot
Karan (Ajay Devgan) is an artist who finds his inspiration in a woman he has never met but has dreamt about for eight years. The minute he lays eyes on Payal (Manisha Koirala) he knows that she is 'the one'. She resists his advances at first, as an exceptionally nasty experience with an egotistical and flirtatious man has left her bruised. Consequentially she'd changed her name from Varsha to Payal and moved from New York to Budapest. Knowing this, Karan still accepts her and with his mother's permission, invites her to Rajasthan to meet his family.
All's well at first, but as filmy fate would have it our heroine discovers that her past refuses to leave her. Shravan (Sanjay Dutt), the very man she wanted to escape with is actually Karan's elder brother. Family drama, wedding rituals and entertainment at a palatial court make up the rest of this story.
Yeah, yeah by now you must have sniffed a bit of Sleeping With The Enemy, a bit of Agnisakshi, some of Hum Aapke Hai Koun...! and a fairly generous helping of Ekta Kapoor-style family melodrama. Well, the makers never claimed to have an original idea, did they?
Performances
When you're presented with a star cast like Sanjay Dutt, Ajay Devgan and Manisha Koirala, you know you aren't going to be entirely disappointed. But talent is often a victim of bad presentation and outdated scripts.
This film allegedly took somewhere between 5–11 years in the making and you can easily tell, as Sanjay Dutt looks a lot younger and Ajay Devgan has since grown into a more powerful actor and an older man. Nonetheless, the duo has a nice way of complementing each other and can definitely pull off a good camaraderie on screen.
