REVIEW: Flashbacks Of A Fool
Almost everyone will want to check Flashbacks Of A Fool out, only because they'll be curious to see what Daniel Craig has taken on after his widely-acclaimed performance as James Bond in Casino Royale.
So the first thing that has to be made clear right away is yes, Daniel Craig can get out of his Bond-mode and play other characters, unlike the guy who played the suave spy before him.
AND AS FOR THE MOVIE…
Daniel Craig is Joe Scott, an actor past his prime. Struggling to get roles to remain in the limelight, Joe is the has-been who squandered every opportunity he had. His career already over, Joe has been written off by all. His personal assistant threatens to quit, and his agent quits after telling him off in a restaurant. Joe gets a call from his mother, informing him of his childhood friend Boots' death.
The aging star takes a bottle of alcohol to the beach and ventures into the sea. This is when he has a major flashback…
BOOZE-SOAKED MEMORIES
The young Joe Scott (played by Harry Eden) grows up in a household where he is the only man. Boots’ is his best friend, and something is brewing between Joe and Ruth, his teenage love. Just when things are about to get serious between Ruth and him, Joe gets seduced by Evelyn, who is his mother’s friend and their neighbour.
Having sex with Evelyn makes Joe late for his meeting with Ruth, who spots lovebites on his neck and is heartbroken. The second time they have sex, Evelyn's young daughter goes near the sea, and dies a quick, horrible death.
Unable to deal with the consequences of his actions, Joe Scott runs away from home. He becomes a big movie star and lives a reckless life filled with drugs, booze and women.
BACK TO THE PRESENT
Joe, now much older and without a career, decides to confront his fears instead of running away from them. He goes back home to meet his family and Ruth, who got married to Boots. Joe is extremely awkward and lost, not sure of how to face the people he had left behind many years ago, not sure what to say to Ruth, his teenage love and now his best friend's widow.
