REVIEW: Govinda's Life Partner
Divorce is no laughing matter. But then a film like Life Partner never promised you a moral science lecture.
Fardeen Khan and Genelia are firm believers of love marriage. Their friend Tusshar Kapoor goes in for an arranged one with Prachi Desai. But soon both couples get frustrated with their married lives and decide to go in for a divorce. Helping them is a divorce lawyer played by Govinda – whose only mission in life is to break marriages. Life Partner for a change is not a slapstick comedy. It's more of a sitcom - much like what you see on prime time television.
It's fairly easy to write off a film like this. The plot is another predictable attempt at recreating the success of No Entry. And quite frankly most of the jokes are very silly. But there is still something, which prevents the movie from falling apart.
Govinda and Tusshar Kapoor make the most childish of lines work simply because of their goofy comic timing. It's nice to see Govinda in his witty element. Nowhere near his heydays, but he is still getting there. Watch him play around a with simple line - Tum Chup Raho, when he is convincing a woman to seek divorce. Fardeen's funny as the hen pecked boyfriend, but tends to get too loud.
Prachi Desai plays the progressive Indian bahu-straight out of her TV serial days. She also makes an attempt to go glam, but looks too conscious to pull off the satin lingerie. Genelia has an attractive screen presence. But needs serious work on her voice modulation and diction.
Verdict: The production values are tacky and music is nothing to hum about. Even the climax is predictable. Yet Life Partner, is something you can watch with your family. It's far from smart, but trust me a lot of people out there are going to find it too damn funny.
