REVIEW: Kambakkht Ishq
Sometime back in 2007 it seemed all studio bosses set themselves a singular goal – Get Akshay Kumar on board. Pay him the moon and block a few months of his life in the form of bulk dates. Did anyone say script? Well, who cares! After all they have the biggest star in town. A good-looking heroine, foreign locales, slick music videos and few SMS gags would take care the rest.
Kambakkht Ishq is just about everything you expect in an Akshay Kumar film. So there is no point complaining about the lack of logic, silly situations and sexist humour. Akshay never promised to surprise you. But what one expects from Kambakkht Ishq is non-stop fun. Damn the sensibilities, as long as the jokes crack you up. Sadly Kambakhht Ishq runs out of steam in the humour department.
With the peppy promos playing on air for over three months, by now everyone is pretty aware about the plot. The battle of sexes in the first half is fast paced and genuinely funny in parts. And many of the sometimes-corny, one-liners work solely due to Akshay and Kareena's timing. Trouble starts in the last hour when the director subjects us to emotional atyachar. The movie revisits every done to death cliché of a love story to finally bring the couple together. A movie that's so irreverent about commitment takes an almost forced about turn. And you can easily predict how the climax would unfold nearly half-an-hour in advance.
But hold on! Wasn't this supposed to be ground braking Bollywood meets Hollywood project? Unfortunately the Hollywood angle adds no meat to the plot. The lavish stunts are mere add ons, often breaking the flow of the narrative. Had this film been set in Ulhasnagar instead of Universal Studios, it would have made no damn difference.
As for the Hollywood actors…Brandon Routh and Denise Richards make compete fools of themselves. Denise, who plays herself, is depicted as a sex-addict, desperate enough to get married for some action. Wonder if any of these guys even read the script. Actually none of the international crew members seems to have read it. Else it's surprising how they blatantly lifted the interrogation scene from Rush Hour 3. There are also half a dozen other Hollywood stars who make appearances through stock footage from the Oscars.
But Sylvester Stallone makes a delightful cameo. In fact his two scenes could be easily singled out as the best moments of the film. Even Akshay and Kareena manage to give that little extra in those scenes. Akshay Kumar otherwise pretty much sleep walks through the film. It's his comfort zone devoid of any challenges. Kareena looks simply stunning. Poor Bebo tries hard to add some seriousness to her part.
