REVIEW: Randeep's Love Khichdi
There is one genuinely funny scene in Love Khichdi where Randeep Hooda's character tries to read out rehearsed lines in a last ditch attempt to woo his love. Despite being poorly directed, the tragicomic scene stands out because of Randeep Hooda's acting brilliance.
Unfortunately you cannot say the same about the rest of the film, which is a sheer waste of your time and money.
Hooda plays Vir, a casanova sous chef who goes about bed hopping and fantasising about the many women in his life. Be it his domestic help (Sonali Kulkarni) or his 'intellectual' colleague (Rituparna Sengupta) who runs a bookstore in the hotel he works, Vir couldn't care.
In fact he doesn't even mind being used by a girl (Kalpana Pandit) who promises him to set up his dream restaurant. Though strangely when the bookshop owner gets involved with him and drops him like a hot potato, Vir feels the pinch.
Sandhya (played by Sada), a cute receptionist colleague who has been trying to woo him all along, waltzes into his life and proposes to him. But the incorrigible flirt Vir hesitates and Sandhya walks out on him. That's when he realises the true worth of their friendship and decides to go down on his knees right in the middle of her marriage.
The plot of Love Khichdi is far from being new. What's worse is neither is its treatment. Randeep Hooda pretty much carries the film on his shoulders and despite some inconsistencies holds the fort pretty well. However Love Khichdi takes its own time to tell us a story we've heard innumerable times.
What makes Love Khichdi worse is the fact that it's shockingly chauvinistic. Hooda's character seems to be a figment of some teenager's hormonal imagination put on the screen because someone had a lot of money to burn. The whole domestic help fantasy is especially in bad taste.
Love Khichdi is supposed to be a comedy. Unfortunately the film takes itself seriously and that is where it fails miserably.
Verdict: Love Khichdi is so terrible, you wouldn't want anyone to know you've watched it.
