REVIEW: Thoda Pyaar, Thoda Magic

Rani's performance in the film is dull and lacks zing

Stories about nannies who enter the home and become a part of the family scenario have always been an intrinsic part of both Bollywood and Hollywood. In the '60s we had Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music. Both these films were super hits. Then we had Gulzar deliver his own Indianised version of The Sound of Music in the film Parichay which was also liked by audiences. We can't blame directors who opt for this theme time and again as there's ample scope to come up with a fresh screenplay where the audience is reaching into their handbags for tissues and the producers are laughing their way to the bank.

Being an avid fan of YRF, Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukerji, I must confess that I was really looking forward to this film. And Kunal Kohli has delivered two huge hits in the past; Hum Tum and Fanaa. The common factor in both these films is that Kohli's characters are real and believable. And after two blockbuster hits expectations from the Aditya Chopra-Kunal Kohli duo are bound to be high.

A damp squib

But Thoda… indeed turned out to be the proverbial damp squib. The film begins on an interesting note. Ranbir Talwar (Saif) is forced to become the guardian to four children Vashisht, Iqbal, Aditi and Avantika. He's the corporate honcho who talks in millions but we aren't told how he makes his living. So, Ranbir and his girlfriend Mallika (Ameesha Patel) try to give these kids every material comfort imaginable. Too bad the kids aren't really interested.

Then a portly Rishi Kapoor (who's playing god) decides to send an angel in the form of Rani Mukerji to bring a smile onto the children's faces. Before that we are subjected to an entire sequence in heaven with Rani Mukerji playing the angel. And Rani hasn't looked so terrible on the screen since the days of her debut films. The long permed jet-black hair, the flimsy white chiffon gowns which look more like nighties. Whoever designed her look for this sequence needs a swift kick…wherever it hurts most (and that happens to be Manish Malhotra).

But coming back to lead performances in the film. The best one definitely would be Ameesha Patel. She plays Mallika the bimbette who has an obsession for the latest Prada handbags. She's there to get on your nerves and she succeeds admirably. Even her designer has failed her miserably. Surely it's possible to make somebody look hot and desirable without revealing layers of cellulite. Seems like most of the cost cutting in YRF is happening in the costume department. The outfits are getting skimpier irrespective of whether the situation demands it or not.

Poora crap no magic!

"thoda pyaar thoda magic" awesome desification
of the hollywood movie, nanny mcphee and mary poppins.
"hum nahi sudharenge" is the slogan of all hindi
filmmakers of india.

phew! These people are so expert in indianizing foreign
films and liars too. Every time a poor reporter goes for a
pre release interview, none of these filmmakers are ashamed
of telling lie. These are the same people who do not give
chance to new writers and filmmakers. These are the same
people who make all hue and cry to take indian cinema to
global audience.

god tussi great ho.... No not again.... It is one more
copied film from west... Bruce almighty.

Yash raj days under the sun looks to end with his son adi
chopra favouring ,out of sync actors and actress for some
ridiculous story plots , which i think he would not have
attempted had it been his complete home production.Topping
it ,is the image rani mukherjee has created for herself
over a year with a marriage breaker and a prostitute in
most of the movies ,all these doesnt help the movie in any
sense cause she is trying to be an angel this time healing
wounds . May be 5 years back people would have accepted a
young rani mukherjee in the same role , but saying so its a
personal opinion , a young star cast would have worked well
for this script .

it is better if adi chopra stops this formula of bikini
clad babes in all his movies and rather concentrates on
script sessions and casting the right people for the right
role. The dhoom 2 formula of bikins doesnot work all time .
Hope adi chopra makes the right moves and concentrates on
quality work like in the past ,, rather than just coming out
with a movie each 3 months which is a miserable flop .

I hope preeti aurora is just a stand-in for buzz18. To
regard ameesha patel as a lead performer only highlights her
inadequacy as a 'movie critic'. She is the usual
eye-candy that directors/producers somehow believe every
movie of late should have..Hard to believe kk felt he needed
to. As for performances rani excels as usual, and just shows
her versatality. While other actresses are gyrating, taking
more off than keeping on, and spouting that gibberish that
is called a 'script', she has proven if you have
talent, nothing else is needed. Her ability. Her spunk, and
mischievnous translates well while flying, smiling and
singing. Saif and the kids deliver fine performances that
really brings the message home...Where there is prayer,
there is hope, and in life we all need an angel. I believe
the only person who felt tired and lacked zing was preety
auro when she wrote this review. Rani is definetly not a
size zero, by her own admission she claims to have picked up
3 kilos while shooting the movie. I wonder if preeti
actually saw the movie for if she had she would have noticed
it.

Quite a flop. I am bored seeing saif ....Anyways. He is
getting old. And rani..Please do some serious good work and
dont stuck only with yrf. You dont look great at all. Yash
raj...Please make some good films....What has happened to
you guys ????? Kunal ....Give rani and saif a break
pleeeeeeeeessseeeeeee!!! No more saif!!!

swati Jun 27, 2008 at 08:13 PM

It 's not a serious , issue based film like kunal's last
film fanna but definitely a film for the fids who i am sure
wiill enjoy the brilliant "special effects" treat
given the director . Rani absolutely fitted in the character
of angel and was very spontaneous . Saif was also good
playing a millionaire businessman. All i can say is that one
should go and see the movie as "thoda spl. Effects
thoda magic"

I think yrf should seriouslly concentrate on d script n
content of their,d only movie worked for them last year was
cdi.I hope adi can bring tht magic once again with rab ne
ban di jodi.

Yash raj ka flopraj

kshitoj Jun 27, 2008 at 03:11 PM

Kunal kohli is one of the worst film makers and is a media
created hype.. Hum tum and fanna were absolute disasters and
backed by a friendly media they were touted to be great
movies and became hits.. Aamir khan crying crocodile tears
over the narmada dam and all the drama that followed were
helpful to fanna.

the fact is yrf is an overhyped banner that churns out
third rate stuff year after year after year...It is the deep
pockets of mr. Yash that has ensured that their movies ended
up succeeding.

yrf is a sucessful movie making banner, not a good movie
making banner and the difference between the two is light
years away...
