REVIEW: Tulsi's a soap on celluloid
Director K Ajay Kumar's film Tulsi starts off right away with a Sonu Nigam song, and uses wildlife in its titles, making you wonder whether it’s about loving animals rather than your family.
WATCH TRAILER: Manisha-Irrfan in Tulsi
Manisha Koirala is Tulsi, a perfect wife and mother, who prays to the gods of all three faiths – Hindu, Muslim and Christian. She has four kids, eldest is a girl, followed by twin boys one of whom is handicapped, and then a baby boy. Whew! All possible thanks to a faithful and loving husband Suraj (Irrfan Khan), who is always on tour but brings back lovely gifts for the kids.

Tulsi and Suraj are adopted children of an ashram, where Tulsi teaches music. So, where's the problem, you would ask. Well, Suraj is a drunkard. Considerable film negative is used establishing this fact.
Enter villain, a truck driver and Suraj's friend, effectively played by Yashpal Sharma. The man though married is after Tulsi and tries to rape her when Suraj is away. The kids who are off to school sense danger and come back to save their mommy. Suraj and gives up booze, for the umpteenth time.
But just when you're thinking it's a 'No Drinking' movie (a la Anurag Kashyap's No Smoking), things take a turn. (And thank god for it.)
So, what's the twist, then? Watch it to believe it.
