Music Review: Kismat Konnection

Somebody stop this Pritam guy!

These days one approaches any Pritam album with caution. One never knows what blatant act of plagiarism one will stumble upon.

Pritam is undoubtedly one of the most prolific and commercially successful music directors of our times. He is also the most guilty when it comes to the crime of lifting tunes.

The music composer has given us some of the biggest chart-busters in recent times. He has also left music lovers frothing and fuming by cocking a snook at anyone who has pointed out the original sources of his 'successful tunes'. But Pritam belongs to and represents an industry that makes a living out of inspired ideas borrowed from the local DVD library. Why bother?

Even then. The music of Kismat Konnection has revealed another gem by our dada.

If you think Is This Love (Kahin Na Laage) by Mohit Chauhan/Shreya Ghoshal is reminiscent of Tumse Hi from Jab We Met, wait till you hit the English chorus. The melody in this part is a straight, I repeat, straight lift, from a hugely popular song by the iconic Euro-rock band A-ha.

The original song, Take On Me (released in 1985) is what generations of music lovers grew up on. The song is available on the web (try youtube) listen to the chorus and listen to Pritam's version. Pritam has been lifting tunes from little-known Indonesian bands. But it takes plenty of gumption to pick so popular and well-established a tune.

It is unfortunate that Pritam, who once belonged to a rock-band in Kolkata known for their original tunes, shows little or no compunction while lifting tunes from other bands. If you have been through the struggle and the heartache of having created your own tunes and reaching out to your audience, you would think twice about doing something like this.

Much as I express my dismay at yet another 'discovery' (can't help feeling let down, in spite of the repeated assault), it will have little or no bearing I am sure on the album sales.

The rest of the album is standard Pritam fare. He does have a way with catchy hooks that work well on the dance floor. The lyrics well…some of them of go like this:

Kudi tu lagti hai naughty

Freaky freaky raat ho gayyyi'

Kismat Konnection is definitely NOT an album you would want to spend your monies on. Yes the title track is extremely catchy and yes, you don't mind listening to it on the radio. But that's that.

Verdict: Bad-Kismat Konnection, if you ask us. And Pritam dada, take a break from reality shows and do some soul-searching instead.

Aweful review, infact better don't call it a review. Such
shame & disgrace to people like miss pal, who consider
themselves as music reviewers. They don't know what is
reviewing & what is bringing out personal grudges out in
public. I would like to request the owner or the
administrative people of "buzz18" to reconsider
their decision to make future reviews by some like miss pal,
as if it continues i for sure not going to visit this site
for any music reviews. I am absolutely sure that this
reviewer is having some problem with pritam, as i have seen
singh is kinng's review too. There also she has been very
harsh on pritam despite it being a great album &
everyone liking it to the core & also its music rights
being sold for the highest till date in our industry. I
would heartily urge you people to stop this reviewer from
reviewing any further music albums, she surely is the worst
reviewer i have ever come across.(check out some other
popular music reviewing sites they are really good).
coming back to her claim of lifting the tune, then i
completely disagrees with is this love, as its very vague -
the similarities. And of course its a great album, already
rocking all chartbusters. Super hit thats the only verdict
i'ld give.
kudos to pritam, he is doing some great work, really

Hey chandrima...Well...To be very honest...You do not
deserve to review any music since it seems that you brong
along personal issues in as well....(if you have any)!

there is no accoutability for ones taste but then what you
just posted is just bad!!

2 track in this album, aai paapi and move your body now
are one of the best party tarcks people have heard in a long
time. Ask me, i am a party animal..Well if you think i am
bluffing then wait and see how successful these 2 are going
to be!

apart from the punjabi track...All are good tracks and a
must listen...

dude be a professional and be honest or quite reviewing
music!!

Seriously miss pal ,it is actually fine if u have problems
with pritam but that doesn't mean that u have to
showcase your grudge in this manner by totally thrashing and
insulting such a beautiful album in this manner. I mean is
this a review?? ...Please!!! Throughout the review you
zeroed on one song and u bashed it pretty badly for so
called lifting one single line! U must be in a pritam
bashing mood while listening to both take on me and is this
love. Reviews and reviewers are meant to be unbiased. If u
have personal grudges ,do speak out and express in some
other way, not through reviews as they r meant for public.
Please do keep this mind as thousands of readers will be
reading the review and quiet a good number of them takes
decision accordingly. As far as the album is concerned, its
excellent. I have nothing much to say.

And its not freaky freaky raat ho gayi....It is feeki feeki
raat ho gayeee....Atleast listen to the music before writing
a review. Music might not be as good as qsqt ot dil to pagal
hai but please review it like it should be reviewed.
i like the album, i like bakhuda (has beautiful lyrics),
is this love (is a nice romantic track), aye pappi and move
your body are good to get your feet tapping (the lyrics are
nothing to write about) but these are dance tracks (like so
many nonsensical dance tracks we have these days both in
english and hindi music industry).
all in all they are pleasing to the ear so its not bad at
all.

Wat bullshit review..The album rox!

daphne Jul 01, 2008 at 01:02 AM

For 1 moment i thought that this is some personal grudge
that ms pal is hitting upon rather than being neutral and
writing a review!!
this is disgusting.. I think buzz 18 has lost interest in
their jobs and giving journos a free hand to write nonsense
and ignore the positives which actually guides us music
lovers to choose our music.Am shoched by her ruthless
efforts to defame the guy who has been entertaining us since
years with his songs which has revolutionised the bollywood
music scenario !! If ms pal is so talented herself to negate
pritam in his outstanding song designs why not go and pick
some good songs beforehand and why wait for pritams albums
to release and start her research on them to hit him like
this and make a complete fool of herself by making this a
personal agenda, its shocking that her entire write up
speaks only negative about pritam and ms pal pls take some
music lessons first before commenting as " kismat
konnection" album is rocking and worth spending our
monies on.
cheers pritam for the lovely song bakhuda

I totally agree wit you gals, ms pal has some personal
grudges against the composer pritam which is not right,
atleast give the bit he deserves, how cud you ignore bakhuda
?? It is such a lovely song comes as a total refresher to my
mind, i guess buzz18 editors have lost interest & given
the journos a free hand to write the unwanted and ignore the
positives.Plzz do personal attacks at some other place not
here atleast not in a music review where we like to hear
more positive remarks.
we muzic lovers dont care about the sources it shud touch
our heartz and thats what pritam does with his music..
Cheers pritam for another hit album.

disgusting !!

KUNALI Jun 27, 2008 at 06:31 PM

How cud u not mention bakhuda by atif aslam...Its an amazin
number...
plzz..Its fine to mention the negatives, but at least
mention the positives too...

the title track and "bakhuda" are d high points
of the album..N yet,u fail to even touch upon them

even though i don't disagree with what u have written, its
still a bad review

Prerna Jun 27, 2008 at 01:44 PM

Dear ila,
it is largely thanks to the likes of you that the likes of
pritam prosper! Yes ms pal has gone for pritam hammer and
tongs but the guy deserves it. Please don't attack the
messenger if you don't like the message.

dominique Jun 27, 2008 at 10:24 AM

@talha, i agree. I used to like buzz 18 but of late, i have
noticed that all their news is more about the writers
personal judgments of an actor or music etc. This is not a
credible review, we can read this in some blog posted
somewhere on the net by some blogger who has their opinions
on plagirism or how bollywood music is uninspired etc.

but remember, this is about a music review of a particular
album and not an attack on pritam. You have not even
bothered to list all the songs in the album or gone through
each track to tell us what is good or not about them. This
is not a music review; this is a personal hatred agenda.

very silly!

Don't be rude or interrupt others who are having a conversation. Ethnic slurs, personal insults and abuses are rather uncool. Criticise, but know where to draw the line. No point putting in personal details or links, we won't publish them. Try and write in English and please, stick to the point!
