So, the fight between multiplex owners and film producers is over and there's a truckload of Hindi film music coming our way. Scared as I am of being subjected to Pritam Chakraborty's music, I sure am glad to have the audio CD of John Abraham-Katrina Kaif-Neil Nitin Mukesh starrer New York at my desk. Let's get on with the review now that we're done with the introductions.

Sandeep Shrivastava has written the lyrics to three songs on this album and has reserved the words yaaron and pal for KK. Hai Junoon is a superb breezy song, the acoustic guitar sounds fantastic with KK's wonderful vocals. His voice stands above the instruments and yet blends with the rest of the sounds ... it melts into your ears, y'know?

Sunidhi Chauhan's singing delights on Mere Sang, another pleasant pop-rock track. Mere Sang is a worthy follow-up to Hai Junoon. Acoustic guitar and the occasional flute-playing and Sunidhi's voice work incredibly well. Most of Mere Sang is mellow, and the chorus is mid-paced with ear-friendly drum beats. Pritam has balanced the song really well.

Thank you, Pritam - for not letting Mohit Chauhan begin Tune Jo Na Kaha in his customary style. Oh no, I spoke too soon. Bless the devil, Mohit Chauhan is humming. This dude is custom-made for mellow stuff like this. Shrivastava's lyrics are very good, I must say.

However, the track which stands out in New York is Pankaj Awasthi's Aye Saaye Mere. Junaid Wasi has penned the lyrics to this song which has been done Kashmiri folk style.

The remixes of Hai Junoon and Mere Sang are there, if that's your kind of thing. Sam's Theme (with CaraLisa Monteiro on vocals) and New York Theme have been composed by Julius Packiam, who has also remixed Hai Junoon and Mere Sang. Hai Junoon - Remix is pumpy and Mere Sang - Remix is not.  Sam's Theme and New York Theme try to be masterpieces but fail to captivate you on any level.

VERDICT

Rejoice guys, Pritam has finally delivered some good Hindi film music. The breezy compositions come as a surprise and KK's singing will definitely stay with you for awhile.
