MUSIC REVIEW: Paa is melodious
The season of situational soundtracks continues with Paa. Starring the two Bachchans in never before roles, Paa promises big things. Veteran composer Ilaiyaraaja who had scored some melodious tunes for the same team's last effort Cheeni Kum, is back in Paa.
Many Hindi film music fans might not be aware that AR Rahman had spent some of his early years with Ilaiyaraaja. That old connection is very evident in the sound of Paa. There is a dominant Rahmansque tone to the first track Udhi Udhi. The use of violin, piano and percussion bring back old memories of Roja. Brilliantly sung by the Khuda Jaane girl Shilpa Rao, Udhi Udhi is easy on the ears and simple on the lips.
The same track appears in another version with minor changes in lyrics. Udhi Udhi becomes Mudhi Mudhi, but the sound is equally melodious.
Sunidhi Chauhan's Hichki Hichki is heavy on bass and drums. In terms of arrangement and singing the feel is similar to San Sana Nan from Asoka. Lively and seductive, Hichki Hichki works more for its singing than the tune.
Gali Mudhi Itefaq is a male version of Mudhi Mudhi. Sung by Shaan it's got an unplugged feel with very little instruments. But Shaan's dramatic voice loses out to Shilpa's energy in the female version. This one sounds like a weak after thought to a great song.
Gumm Summ has a childlike innocence to it. Quite evidently picturised on a bunch of children, Gumm Summ has an effective chorus backed up by R Bavatharini's simple voice. The violin is once again the predominant instrument. A song about living in the moment, Gumm Summ is a genuine melody for children and not a sham like regular Bollywood kiddie numbers.
Halke Se Bhole is a chorus number sung by a bunch of kids. Arranged on the lines of a morning assembly school prayer, Halke Se Bhole doesn't have the impact of Gumm Summ.
Amitabh Bachchan's Mere Paa is a dramatic listen. Minus his trademark baritone, it's hard to recognise Big B's vocals. A situational number, it gives you an idea of level of performance one can expect from Bachchan in the film.
The Paa Theme that's being playing in the promos is an instantly catchy tune. A music piece involving a violin, it has a fairy tale-like feel to it.
Verdict: Paa is an honest effort unlike anything else in the market. Simple, sweet melodies that strike a chord are hard to come by these days. Paa is one of the few albums that stays away from any gimmickry. This one is straight form the heart.

Dear bhanu,
i agree with your argument on the comments passed about
the music, but dont you think so .If you review about a
persons work you need to know a bit of him or her. Please
forgive me if anything is rude, hey if you travel to south
raaja is no less than a musical god, he has followers not
just fans, you will not be able to name any composer
including rehman who have not been inspired by raajasir, yes
offcourse all of his work may not be equally appealling
compated to his own works. But talking about the resemblance
of his work with other composer is equally not
appreciatable. Hey offcourse rehman is too a great master in
his work , but please do not compare. The best bach of is
best on his bests and hayden is best on his bests no
comparison please ,that is to about legends we need more
knowledge and more realistic views before making a comment,
personally you can but if it is on a forum needs a lot my
freinds.
thnaks
Ilayaraaja is one of the greatest music composer of this
world and it is a pity he was born in tamilnadu and not
received the recognition he rightly deserves. His music
touches the heart unlike some others who get the awards but
does not touch your heart. Best regards

Anadji ,
you are not eligible to write any musical review...
from this review we surprised that how you get this
oppurtunity to write review about music without having
proper knowledge.
see raja sir is one of the guru of arr .So the song of arr
may resemble like raja sir's old songs.. And raja sir's song
won't resemble arr's.Ok..And both are great !!!
u dnt compare muscians...Each have a seperate talent....
Don't compare raja sir music with some other music director
. I dont find any of similarites you mentioned above . I
think ur misic knowledge is not worth to comment about raja
sir music

first asian to compose a symphony of the royal philharmonic
society..Does he even know wat a symphony is??!!Has composed

the director's name!Ilayaraaja is a sensation!!None can
match him!Arr is nothin in front him!!
Balki said " ...Half of the country do not know the
existence of this person(ilaiyaraaja)".
a small amedment to this statement "..Half of the
music reviewers do not know music but they write
reviews"
as ilaiyaraaja said now a days every one who knows 2-3
scales becomes a music director.(...Muisc reviewer)
Anandji a small history for u :
once in a recording ,people played a prelude of a song and
all the musicians kept their instruments on the floor and
gave a standing ovation and they said that they have never
heard this kind of sound. That song is none other than
manirathnam's "sundari kannal oru seithi" from the
film "thalapathy".Ilaiyaraaja used 126
musicians. He incorporated various instruments like frech
horns ,horns etc..,it was like a festival in bombay. They
used to talk like " hey !! Today ilaiyaraaja is
recording with these many instruments and we need to see
that".Sometime back shankar jaikishan did a song
"aa ab lout chale.." with lot many
instruments. After that we are seeing something like that and
the sound is entirely different and unique. What a sound !!
Starting from recordists to musicians and each and everyone
praised him.
.....It is one of his so many miracles.
...There is a dominant rahamansque tone to the first track
udhi udhi. The use of violin, piano and percussion bring back
old memories of raja....2009 best joke
anandji it is better to know history before making a
comment.Raaja sir's music and orchestration is unimaginable.
