MUSIC REVIEW: Super Star is fun

The album has a couple of hummable tracks with simple sounds

With almost zilch publicity, the makers have released the music of Super Star, a fortnight before the film’s release. Now one expects a solo Kunal Khemu film to be high on dance tracks. And given the film’s young cast and showbiz centric theme, Super Star comes across as another racy album designed for the younger set.

But Super Star opens with a surprisingly melodious number. Ajnabi has an old world, jazz like feel to it. Music director Shamir Tandon has skillfully used the guitar and saxophone to create a relaxed mood in this song. It’s a perfect track for those long n lazy drives through the countryside.

Next up is Adnan Sami’s Don’t I Love. Sami goes into his Bheegi Bheegi Raaton Mein mode. The song is easy on the ears, but wish they had done away with the English rap in the background. Hamza’s Mann Tu Talbat is half Arabic-half Hindi. Poetic lyrics coupled with electronic sounds remind us of the Emraan Hashmi-Aatif Aslam combo in Bhatt films. Predictable stuff, but catchy enough for a music video.

As expected the song has three remixes, which sound similar except for slight variations in the beats and tempo. Admittedly the tune grows on you after a while but having four successive versions is just too much.

The album goes classical with Ankhon Se Khwaab. Sung by Ustad Sultan Khan and Rekha Bhardwaj this one is a situational number, but doesn’t make any impact. In the album this one deserves a fast-forward. Shaan and Kunal Ganjawala’s Rafa Dafa is a campus track with Hinglish lyrics. There is a generous use of drums to give it a youthful feel. A nice tune, which hopefully will get the picturisation, it deserves!

Super Star truly breaks away from the norm with its simple arrangements and melodious tunes. It may not have a chartbusting score but the album is a sincere effort. It might go unnoticed due to the lack of star power, but the first three songs definitely merit a listen.

Verdict: 2.5/5
